Chateau Petrus is one of the world’s rarest and most expensive wines, now under the direction of Christian Moueix and oenologist Jean Claude Berrouet. Located in Pomerol on the right bank of the Gironde river, the estate is spread across 28 acres on heavy clay soil with an iron subsoil. This is the idea condition for growing Merlot grapes.
The vines are unusually old, as they are only replanted after they reach 70 years of age. Petrus employs traditional viticultural techniques, such as severe pruning in the winter, regular ploughing, crop-thinning, de-leafing, manicuring the clusters in the summer - and allows the perfect ripening of the fruit. The grapes are manually harvested within two afternoons and sorted before crushing.
Fermentation is carried out gently, without any over-extraction, in temperature controlled concrete tanks. The blend, very often pure Merlot, is defined in December and the young wine is aged in 100% new oak barrels.
