Wine enthusiasts who find First Growth Bordeaux a little out of their price range have been given some tips on how they can get hold of some more affordable alternatives.
According to Wine Spectator, outside of the powerful Medoc appellations there is "a whole new world of Bordeaux".
The 2008 Chateau Moulin Haut-Laroque is a particularly dense red with a core of dark plum, the article suggests, complemented by snappy olive, tobacco and mineral notes.
Another favourite is the 2008 Chateau Dalem, which the publication suggests is broader and fresher, with red currant fruit held in check by chalk-flavoured tannins.
The Chateau Fontenil, Chateau Gaby and Haut-Carles are also worth looking out for, the piece adds.
Another smaller Bordeaux vineyard, Chateau Chenu Lafite, was recently purchased by a Chinese billionaire.
Speculation suggested that the brand name's similarity to First Growth Chateau Lafite Rothschild may have been a factor in the decision.
