The founder of Hong Kong's Independent Wine Centre has issued fresh warnings over the rise of wine fraud in the Chinese market.
The Daily Telegraph reports that Simon Tam advised buyers take a close look at their purchases, as the practice of refilling genuine bottles with fake wine is becoming more common.
His main recommendations were always to buy from reputable dealers and auction houses, and to take particular caution if offered wine at a discount price.
He also warned that people he knew had been offered HK$10,000 (£800) for an empty bottle of Chateau Lafite Rothschild.
According to reports by Relaxnews, the problem has reached such a level that it is not unusual to see waiters smash the bottles of fine wines after a wine tasting to ensure they cannot be used again.
Earlier this month, an episode of BBC London's Inside Out was broadcast that focused on wine fraud, after a reporting team spent six months investigating the problem.
