Wine enthusiast speaks of pride at Bordeaux Chinese influence

An Asian wine investor has spoken of his pride in the fact that Bordeaux labels have sought to embrace Chinese influences with the labels for their 2008 bottles.

According to Wine Spectator, Hong Kong collector George Tong is delighted that "one of the best wines in the world", Chateau Mouton Rothschild, has commissioned one of his compatriots to design the label for the 2008 bottles.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild announced last month that artist Xu Lei had designed the label in question, which depicts the brand's sheep emblem stood between two half moons.

The vineyard said that this symbolises the idea that a great wine can bring together cultures from different parts of the world.

Mr Tong also revealed why Chateau Lafite Rothschild's decision to put the Chinese symbol for the number eight on its 2008 wines was such a shrewd move.

"The pronunciation of eight in Chinese rhymes with that of the word fortune," he told the publication.
