Will the Mosel Valley motorway bridge benefit the fine wines industry?
Vintners based in Germany's Mosel Valley are split over proposals to build a four-lane bridge in the region, where some of the world's finest Riesling wines are produced.

Those opposed to the new bridge, which would take motorway traffic through the valley, are mainly concerned about the impact on the area's picturesque landscape, which is a huge driver for visits from wine buffs and tourists.

Speaking to the BBC, one of the region's leading wine makers Ernst Loosen, whose family has been making wine in the region for more than 200 years, suggested that the motorway may even cut off water supplies to the vineyards.

However, winery Philipps-Eckstein's Patrick Philipps told the broadcaster that although the bridge will in no way fit the natural landscape, it will "bring more people from Belgium and Holland, and shorten travel times from other parts of Germany".

Mosel Reislings are among the most highly prized fine wines in the world, with some valued over and above French burgundy such as Romanee Conti and Domaine Leflaive.

Speaking to Bloomberg earlier this month, British wine writer Jancis Robinson underlined her support for the campaign against the bridge's construction.

She told the news agency that the valley is "an absolute gem" and produces Rieslings of "unrivalled delicacy".
