Vinexpo attendance up 40%
Vinexpo, the major wine fair that launched in Hong Kong earlier this week, has come to a close with some impressive visitor numbers.
Attendance was up by 40 per cent compared with the last show two years ago, at an event which saw 880 exhibitors from 32 countries showcase their produce, decanter.com reports.
Vinexpo was also an opportunity to scrutinise which wines the Chinese are drinking: overwhelmingly the top Bordeaux like chateau Latour and Palmer, according to Gemini Yip of Hong Kong's Crystal Cafe, who told the website that "red wine is very popular".
Nearly every wine-producing country sent exhibitors to the show, from Napa Valley to Romania, Bulgaria and Greece.
Surprisingly, Australia was something of a no-show at Vinexpo, despite its proximity to China and cultural links with the country and has been widely expected to be the next nation after France to break the mainland Chinese market.
