The Hong Kong wine market is no longer "bipolar", according to one wine expert.
For some time, a theory has developed that Hong Kong buyers only purchase two types of wine - the very best examples, such as Chateau Lafite Rothschild from Bordeaux and Domaine de la Romanee-Conti from Burgundy, or cheap, low-quality produce.
However, in researching her new Guide to the Hong Kong Wine Trade, master of wine Debra Meiburg found that Hong Kong has a strong mid-market.
"Sixty-two percent of all wine business is mid-market – Hong Kong has a really strong, solid core. That's not what anyone is saying about our market," Ms Meiburg told Decanter.
It was also discovered that sales of more than £80 per bottle account for just 17 per cent of all wine trade done in Hong Kong.
Recent data supplied by the Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux revealed that between them, Hong Kong and China now take 60 per cent of all the wine exported from Bordeaux.
