A Very Old Tawny vintage port from Taylor's is to be released in December with a record-breaking price tag.
Scion, which has been ageing in casks since 1855, is considered one of the rarest wines in the world, dating back to the pre-phylloxera period. As such, the vintage port will be priced at £2,500 per bottle.
Adrian Bridge, managing director of Taylor's, said that normally older wines are used in their 30 to 40-year-old tawny blends, but Scion is just too good to be blended.
He told Decanter magazine: "Very often these wines are so intense in their ageing that they end up almost too cloying.
"This wine still has some nice acidity, which gives some bite to the wine and gives something that is just quite extraordinary."
Paul Symington of Symington Family Estates recently told the Drinks Business that 2010 could be a classic year for port, due to the high quality of the year's grape harvest.
