Oenophiles looking to boost their brain power may want to try pairing a glass of their favourite Bordeaux or Burgundy with a bar of chocolate.
Two studies conducted by the University of Northumbria focused on the effects of polyphenols - plant chemicals found in wine - finding they increase the flow of blood to the brain.
In addition, polyphenols are also found in dark chocolate, and further study established that the substances work even better when they are used in combinations.
A glass of Bordeaux or Burgundy will therefore boost brain power, but combining it with dark chocolate will have an even greater effect.
Psychologist Emma Wightman, who led the research, also revealed that the older a person gets, the more these chemicals could help.
"Our tests were on young students whose cognitive abilities would be at their peak. They are less likely to see an improvement. We are now carrying out studies on older volunteers," she said.
Previous research has also shown that polyphenols may inhibit the development of certain types of cancer.
