Ornellaia has been described as the perfect gift for wine-loving mums by Shelley Boettcher from Uncorked in Calgary, who recently spoke to the Calgary Herald.
Ornellaia is part of the so-called Super Tuscans who dominate northern Italy’s wine production. In general, wines picked for mothers should be ones that can enjoyed on a night in a relaxing environment, and shouldn’t necessarily be ones that have to be stored away too long until they reach their optimum drinking level.
That is why choosing a wine from Tuscany could be worthwhile. The wines are generally easygoing to match the culture and style of the region. They are not everyday wines, but they certainly are enjoyable at the weekend or on special occasions, such as a birthday.
The Tuscan terrain is what makes these wines so special. Most are made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Merlot, with all three often being deployed in the more intense wines. You are always guaranteed an experience with a Super Tuscan wine, with the unique flavours placing you in the foothills of north Italy with the sun on your back and the sea breeze in your hair.
Most wines are usually best after five years, so look to find an older wine if it is for drinking now.
