A vineyard in Marlborough, the New Zealand region known as the home of prestigious Cloudy Bay, has received a trophy at a competition in London.
Mud House 2010 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc was given the Gastropub Wine of the Year award at the Sommelier Awards, as chosen by a panel of 30 experts from restaurants and bars.
A blind tasting was held together with a traditional British meal of fish and chips, and judges described the wine as "bold and refreshing", with notes of grass, elderflower fruit, green peat and citrus.
"These flavours helped cut through the heavy notes of the food with the zingy character coming to the fore with a creamy mouthfeel which they said altogether was a lovely match," said Cathy Wansink, spokesperson for Mud House.
Later this month, judging for New Zealand's New World Wine awards will begin, bringing 13 experts together to rate the country's consumer wines.
