Louis Latour wants Burgundy to work together

Burgundy producer Louis Latour is calling on the region's estates to work more closely with one another in order to promote biodiversity and vineyard management.

The project, dubbed Paysage de Corton, aims to make estate owners "look at things on a larger scale".

Louis Latour's assistant director, Boris Champy, says the key aspect on the initiative is to make growers realise that the way in which they work on their own land can have a potentially adverse impact on their neighbours' property, the Drinks Business reports.

Speaking at a masterclass at the Louis Latour Agency tasting session, he explained: "We want to go beyond the scale of the plot."

He added that Paysage de Corton will hopefully "preserve the authenticity of the landscape and the vitality of the vineyard", while also benefiting the local ecosystem.

Louis Latour is not forcing vineyards to change the way they work, instead encouraging them to work more sensibly, considering aspects such as how the soil erosion at the top of the hill in Corton impacts water absorption at the bottom.

Mr Champy admits that the project would be easier if it were in the more closely-knit Bordeaux region, but he told the publication he is hopeful that the project could be widened to other appellations in Burgundy.

He feels that Burgundy's aim to gain UNESCO World Heritage status makes initiatives such as this even more vital.

The Ministry of Ecology and Culture has agreed to include the Burgundy climats on the official July 2013 listing for UNESCO.

Aubert de Villaine of Domaine de la Romanee Conti is leading the movement, and believes that the region could benefit from a 30 per cent increase in tourism if it receives this status.
