Lodovico Antinori has a new treat for Super Tuscan fans
After impressing the world with Ornellaia and Masseto, generally considered two of Italy's finest wines, Marchese Lodovico Antinori has a new surprise in store for lovers of Super Tuscans.
The Italian winemaker's latest project, in collaboration with his brother Piero, is based at Tenuta di Biserno in Bibbona where he intends to grow cabernet franc, the Daily Telegraph reports.
"This is a blessed place to make wine, with terroir to rival the best in France and a microclimate to rival the best in California," Mr Anitori told the newspaper.
He added: "We might be seen as renegades now, but we will be remembered as pioneers and people will forget we used French varieties."
And journalist Jonathan Ray agrees: the wines are "remarkable", he says, exhibiting rich damson and mulberry-like fruit together with silky tannins.
Known as one of the earliest exponents of the Super Tuscans, Marchese Lodovico Antinori's wine company traces its origins as far back as the 14th century.
