Lesser-known Grand Crus 'offer more than you might think'
While the experts are agreed that 2009 produced some of the best Bordeaux in years, one writer has reminded fans that some examples of recent vintages should not be overlooked.
Writing in the Oxford Times, Sarah McCleery made her recommendations based on a recent tasting in London of a selection of Bordeaux Grand Crus, which gave her the opportunity to sample some of the lesser-known wines of the region.
The Margaux-based 2006 chateau Rauzan-Segla is a "magical wine", according to Ms McCreary, while the 2007 chateau Smith Haut-Lafitte has "inviting aromas and a lovely freshness to the fruit".
What's more, this latter Graves Grand Cru Classe can be purchased without breaking the bank, with the writer noting that a 12-bottle case is available from Fine and Rare Wines for £320.
Formerly owned by Scotsman George Smith, chateau Smith Haut-Lafitte is currently under the directorship of former Olympic ski champion Daniel Cathiard.
