The rare bottle of chateau Montelena Chardonnay 1973 that went under the hammer for Spectrum Wine Auctions this month has raised $11,325 (£7,316).
It is the wine that came top of the 1976 Judgement of Paris tasting, an event which shocked the wine world as experts ranked a number of wines from the US above their French counterparts.
UK-based software engineer Jason Corcoran bought the Montelena, which completed his collection of all 20 wines used in the Judgement of Paris.
He plans to put the wines on display in the 20,000-bottle cellar he is building in his house, according to decanter.com.
"In an ideal world, I'd have two of the Chateau Montelenas - one to keep and one to drink," Mr Corcoran told the website.
French wines featuring in the Judgement of Paris tasting included chateaux Haut-Brion 1970, Mouton-Rothschild 1970, Leoville Las Cases 1971 and Mersault Charmes Roulot 1973.
