HK wine auction brings in more than $6m

Spectrum Wine Auctions has announced that its largest sale to date took place last month at the International Commerce Centre in Hong Kong, raising a total of over $6 million (£3.8 million).

Bordeaux wines were among the best sellers, with 12 bottles of Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1982 going for $78,000 (£49,000); a 37-year vertical of Chateau Mouton Rothschild for $22,500 (£14,000) and a dozen Chateau Petrus 1995 for $33,000 (£21,000).

Attendees' wine appetites were whetted with tastings of Chateau Haut Brion 1989, Chateau Latour 1995 and Chateau Ausone 2004 prior to the auction, presided over by former Christie's wine expert Richard Brierly.

"Our prices realised and sell-through rate confirm our strong relationships with collectors," said Spectrum Wine Auctions president Jason Boland.

Hong Kong has become the world's biggest venue for fine wine auctions, bringing in $123.5 million (£77 million) in the first five months of 2011 alone, helped along by the abolition of wine duty in 2008.
