Glass to suit all Champagnes to be released in UK

A new glass designed to suit any style of Champagne is to be introduced in the UK.

The glass was designed by Richard Juhlin at Sweden's Reijmyre Glassworks, and although first produced in 1999, it has until now only been sold in the firm's native country.

It is, however, used by some Champagne houses, and the company has now decided to expand sales into the UK market.

Margareta Dale will be responsible for the UK distribution, and she told the Drinks Business that the main concept behind the glass is that it can adapt to all different styles of Champagne.

By using one single vessel, those tasting a number of different styles will also be better placed to make comparisons with the glass acting as a reference point.

She told the publication that it "gives a better experience than drinking from another high end Champagne glass, and it's been designed by Richard primarily for his own use when tasting and grading Champagne".

Each glass is hand-blown by the Swedish firm, which has been in operation since 1810. Dale is targeting restaurants and fine wine merchants, as well as private customers with an eye for a good Champagne.

The shape of the glass has been designed to be aesthetically pleasing with an elongated appearance that allows the bubbles to rise, and convex sides with a narrow rim that allow the wine to be swirled.

Converts to the new style include Richard Geoffroy of Dom Perignon, Ruinart's Frederic Panaiotis and Billecart Salmon's Antoine Roland-Billecart.

However, perhaps the strongest backing for the glass comes from the designer himself, Richard Juhlin.

The Swedish journalist holds the world record for the largest number of Champagnes ever tasted, and his new book, Eight Thousand Champagnes, would indicate he knows a thing or two about these classic wines.
