Duchess of Cornwall reigns over UK wine

While the UK's winemakers may have some way to go before they can compete with the likes of Le Pin and Leoville Lascases, the industry has now attracted a prominent figurehead to promote its interests at home and abroad.

The Duchess of Cornwall has become the new president of the UK Vineyards Association, succeeding Lord Montagu of Beaulieu in the role.

She has already paid visits to Camel Valley in Cornwall and Surrey's Denbies Estate, and will next year host the English and Welsh Wine of the Year awards in the House of Lords.

"Her support of this growing industry acknowledges the phenomenal growth in awareness of English and Welsh vineyards and wines," said Ian Edwards, chairman of the UK Vineyards Association.

"We are immensely proud of the achievements of many of our wines and are looking forward to continued success and increased volumes."

The Duchess may also be called upon to settle the long-running argument over what to name "English champagne", with suggestions so far including Britagne and Merret.
