Burgundy wines, including Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, were big sellers at the latest Sotheby's auction in London, despite competition from some big names from Bordeaux.
The auction included some spectacular Bordeaux vintages such as Petrus 1978, and Cheval Blanc 1947, but the Drinks Business reports that lots of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti stole the show in terms of sales.
A single bottle of the 2005 vintage, with an estimate of £6,500 to £8,000, sold for considerably more at £10,350, while a case of the 1988 proved one of the highest-selling lots at £63,000.
Chateau Lafite Rothschild also performed well in the auction, as did a selection of Super Tuscans from the cellar of Lodovico Antiori. Among the Bordeaux wines, one highlight was a case of Chateau Latour 1961 for nearly £11,000.
It follows news that auction house Christie's has appointed Simon Tam, the founder of the Hong Kong Independent Wine Centre, as its head of wine in China.
