Chinese businessman looking for cultural exchange in Bordeaux

Entrepreneur Jin Shan Zhang has become the latest Chinese investor to take control of a Bordeaux vineyard.

It is thought that in excess of 20 Chinese nationals now own winemaking properties in Bordeaux, following on from the growing reputation of the region's wine in the Far East.

Mr Zhang, who owns a large travel agency and some of the biggest fruit-alcohol brands in China, plans to use his existing expertise on the Entre-deux-Mers estate Chateau Grand Moueys.

Key to this is the development of a spa at the chateau itself and a nine-hole golf course and tennis courts on the 170 hectares of land, 58.5 hectares of which will remain home to the vines.

Mr Zhang hopes that it will allow him to create a "Chinese-French cultural exchange", with an upscale restaurant and renovated luxury bedrooms.

"From 2013, we hope to welcome around 10,000 Chinese visitors a year, but the chateau will also be open to European guests," the 48-year-old told Decanter.com.

"We will retain the luxury French feel of the wine and the estate, and hope to marry this with Chinese culture."

As for the wine, around 20 per cent of it will remain in Europe for distribution, but the rest will be used to build reputation in China.

The announcement comes as figures from Vinexpo show that wine tastes in China continue to develop, as whites increase in popularity.

While red wines still make up 91 per cent of all wine consumption in China, there was 19 per cent growth in the number of white wines drunk last year.

Furthermore, Vinexpo expects growth of 70 per cent from current levels by 2015.

Group chairman Dominique Heriard Dubreuil said consumption will continue to increase as cultural habits change, adding: "In general, Chinese people don't like to drink something cold, but white wine is not at its best when warm."
