Chilean wine beats Haut-Brion and Lafite-Rothschild in blind tasting
Chile may well be on its way to being taken seriously in the world of fine wine, after one of its vintages emerged victorious in a blind tasting against two of Bordeaux's Premier Crus, a Super Tuscan and one of California's best.
Around 100 of New York's eminent wine writers, sommeliers and retailers turned out for the tasting, which included Chile's Errazuriz Kai, California's Opus One, Bordeaux's Lafite-Rothschild and Haut-Brion and Tuscany's Sassicaia, Reuters reports.
All wines were of the 2006 vintage and Errazuriz Kai was declared the winner, followed by Opus One in second place and Haut-Brion in third, while the Lafite-Rothschild came in at fifth.
Errazuriz Kai is made from the Carmenere grape, which was originally found in Bordeaux but is now rare in France after being all but eradicated by disease in 1867.
Chilean growers are credited with preserving the variety after it was imported from Bordeaux in the 19th century.
