Wine auction house Sotheby's has ended the calendar year in familiar fashion, with a sale dominated by Asian interest in Chateau Lafite Rothschild Bordeaux.
According to Decanter, Sotheby's took a total of £1.97 million at the event, with numerous records for single lots broken.
Seven of the top ten highest value lots were Chateau Lafite Rothschild, five of them from the 1982 vintage.
Twelve standard bottles of 1982 Chateau Lafite Rothschild sold for £46,000, while six magnums of the same vintage sold for £41,000.
"Lafite continues to ride a wave following the phenomenal success of Sotheby's October Hong Kong sale of wines direct from the cellars of the chateau," Serena Sutcliffe, worldwide head of Sotheby's wine department, told the publication.
In a recent piece for the Wall Street Journal, author Jay McInerney suggested that with the price of First Growth Bordeaux continuing to rise, wine enthusiasts are switching their attentions to smaller vineyards and shunning the big labels.
