Wine lovers can get a different view of their favourite drink with a comic opera that is currently showing at the Buxton Festival.
Performed by Opera Unlimited, The Lovely Ladies is a musical in which wines, from Bordeaux to Chateau d'Yquem to champagne, are the stars of the show, Decanter reports.
It is based on 50 years of tasting notes from veteran Decanter columnist Michael Broadbent, and the story concerns the wines' reactions to his departure from the trade.
Mr Broadbent gave a speech when the opera opened at Christie's last year, and described it as a "comic romp" in the tradition of Gilbert & Sullivan.
"There's great use of pastiche and parody. It's beautifully managed with delightful staging, and you don't need to be a wine expert to get the jokes," opera critic George Hall told the publication.
Opera Unlimited has also used the success of The Lovely Ladies to donate money to charity, with £50,000 raised for Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres from the opening performance of the show.
