Champagne experts try world's oldest vintage

A handful of wine experts today (November 17th) got the chance to try the oldest champagne in existence.

Two bottles of champagne from the early 19th century were opened by the divers who found them, with 30 wine experts invited to taste.

A total of 30 bottles were found in July, when a team discovered a shipwreck in the waters south of Aaland, an area between Finland and Sweden.

Most of the bottles were found to be from the now defunct vineyard Juglar, but the distinctive corks have revealed that some are in fact Veuve Clicquot.

"We were replacing the corks … I eased out one cork and I saw 'Reims' and 'QUOT' and I knew. It was the best moment in my professional career, maybe my life," explained Veuve Clicquot winemaker Francois Hautekur.

Bloomberg writer Richard Vines tried the champagnes, claiming that they are both sweet. The Juglar is deep with notes of orange and raisins, while the Veuve is lighter, floral and complex.
