Can the champagne cork be replaced?

Champagne producers are looking for a replacement for traditional methods of bottle closure, according to Ruinart chef de cave Frederic Panaiotis, but are having difficulty finding a substitute that matches the drama of popping a cork.

Speaking to the Drinks Business, Mr Panaiotis said the world's supply of cork is almost entirely dependent on Spain and Portugal, meaning the industry has been searching for a contingency plan for years.

"Of course we have looked at screwcap, but the problem there is in the disgorging process," he told the publication.

"You will become a rich man if you can find me a screwcap that can be re-used. So it seems the most realistic option is the crown cap."

He added whimsically that the iconic loud "pop" associated with opening a bottle of champagne is "one of the best parts" of enjoying the wine.

The world of wine was recently surprised by Remy Cointreau's decision to enter into negotiations with French brands group EPI concerning the sale of its champagne division.
