Bordeaux 2009 pricing 'could alienate core buyers'
Bordeaux en primeur 2009 may be running the risk of over-reliance on the Asian market and risks alienating the core markets like the US, according to a representative from one chateau.
In an email to decanter.com, the representative - who did not wish to be named - said too many Bordeaux vintners are becoming too greedy in their efforts to get a slice of Asia, a strategy that could end up backfiring on them.
"The US market is no longer into Bordeaux wines and we are perceived as too expensive, even though the dollar is now higher and many California wines or Italian Super Tuscans cost more than us," the respresentative told the website.
"It is all about perception."
Indeed, according to California-based K&L Wine Merchants as reported by Bloomberg, the US enthusiasm for the 2009s has so far been more muted than it was for the 2005 vintage, although investors will buy first growths like Latour "no matter what".
