An Austrian Pinot Noir has outshone a number of contenders, including some from Burgundy's Chambolle Musigny, in a blind tasting held in Singapore this month.
The tasting, which took place on August 4th, placed Wieninger, Pinot Noir Grand Select 2004 Wien at the top of a list of 34 international wines.
Burgundy also made an impressive showing, with Comte Georges de Vogue: Chambolle-Musigny, Premier Cru 2005 coming second and DRC: Vosne Romanee, Premier Cru 2006 in eighth place.
The judging panel included Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW of eRobertparker.com, sommelier Timothy Goh and wine collector N K Yong.
Willi Klinger, general manager of the Austrian Wine Marketing Board, said the results demonstrate the impression the country's produce is making on the international stage.
"For a long time, we were known around the world for our white wines only, but now we are more and more being associated with our world-class red wines as well," he commented.
