Asian buyers busy at wine auctions

Asian buyers have topped the buyers' lists for some of the most expensive wines sold at auction in London this summer, it has been revealed.

All three of the priciest lots at Christie's and Sotheby's on June 10th and July 14th respectively were snapped up by Asian bidders, Bloomberg reports.

One lot, six magnums of Romanee-Conti 1971, went for £71,300 at Christie's, while a case of chateau Lafite-Rothschild 1982 went for £39,100 at Sotheby's.

"Nearly 50 per cent of the lots were sold to Asian-based clients as many of the top lots headed east," Chris Munro, director of Christie's London's wine department, told the news provider.

Some 95 per cent of Christie's lots sold at the auction, raising a total of £1.9 million, while Sotheby's saw similar success with 98.5 per cent of lots sold and £1.2 million raised.

Australia's wine industry is also looking to cash in on Asia's new-found taste for wine, after Barossa Valley played host to 600 Chinese "wine ambassadors" from Pernod Ricard this month.
