Antonio Galloni 'will disappoint' Robert Parker's fans and critics

Robert Parker's replacement as Californian wine critic at The Wine Advocate says that he is going to disappoint everyone.

Antonio Galloni insists that those looking for him to emulate Parker will be disappointed, as will those looking for a revolution in the pages of The Advocate.

Speaking to the San Francisco Chronicle, Galloni insisted he will be his own man, but will stick to the principles that have made The Wine Advocate such a respected publication among wine enthusiasts.

"There's a certain percentage of people who just think I'm going to do what Bob did … Then there's the other people out there who are maybe slightly disenchanted with the direction California wine has taken, and they think I'm going to come in and fix all the ills," he explained.

"Neither of them is true. Everybody's going to be disappointed."

It was back in February that Parker announced he would no longer be reviewing Californian wine, instead focusing his time of right and left bank Bordeaux and wines from the Rhone Valley.

Most wine experts agree that Parker's enthusiastic promotion of Californian produce transformed the region's wine industry, allowing brands such as Screaming Eagle, Bryant Family and Harlan Estate to enjoy prodigious growth.

At the time of accepting his new position, Galloni said that he wanted to increase the number of Californian producers that are reviewed in The Wine Advocate.

In his interview with The Chronicle, Galloni reiterated this desire, adding a hope that winemakers on America's western coast may no longer feel obliged to tailor their wines to Parker's formidable palate.

"[Parker] may have gotten to a point where he wanted to free people from feeling they had to make certain choices," Galloni said.

"Maybe this is a catalyst to let people say, 'I want to make the wine I want to make'."

Galloni's first Californian reviews will be published in The Wine Advocate later this month.
