+ 2008 Burgundy: Louis Jadot
HTML clipboard

Louis Jadot have put together a very successful collection of 2008s. The whites are deep and lean, laced with mineral and stuffed to the gills with fresh citrus and orchard fruit while the reds exhibit striking, fruit-driven purity and elegance.

Prices have come down from last year and there is some terrific value for money at top 1er Cru level (Puligny Garenne, Meursault Genevrieres, Gevrey Clos St Jacques and Chambolle Baudes in particular). P.S. The Le Montrachet is stunning!

Notes and Scores from Jancis Robinson

Availability: Shipping from Jadot in Summer 2010

Le Montrachet

18/20 (JR)

£1,100

/Cs(6Bts) IB

"Very pale. Sweet, correct start with real weight and confidence. I hesitate to use the word but this is ‘manly’. Assertive and with superior weight. This is by no means resting on the laurels of the appellation. Very good stuff! Great balance and should probably please for a long time. 18/20" Jancis Robinson www.jancisrobinson.com

Chevalier Montrachet Les Demoiselles

17.5/20 (JR)

£845

/Cs(6Bts) IB

"Much richer and more welcoming on the nose than the rather dry Bâtard. Racy and graceful and this is one Jadot white that seems relatively unscathed by the dried-grape character of 2008. Perhaps the high acidity chimes better with Chevalier’s natural assets? Should have quite a long drinking window. 17.5/20" Jancis Robinson www.jancisrobinson.com

Batard Montrachet

17/20 (JR)

£620

/Cs(6Bts) IB

"Big, beefy nose (it really does smell rather like roast beef). Very tight and dry with marked acidity and not much juice. Almost scratchy texture. Very youthful and chewy indeed. May get there but it’s likely to be one of the leaner Bâtards.17/20" Jancis Robinson www.jancisrobinson.com

Corton Charlemagne

17/20 (JR)

£310

/Cs(6Bts) IB

"Attractively if lightly scented with a little bit of evolution already. Excellent balance and with about the right amount of acidity but in a very lightweight register. I would challenge blind tasters to realise this is a grand cru at this stage in its evolution. 17/20" Jancis Robinson www.jancisrobinson.com

Meursault Genevrieres

17/20 (JR)

£210

/Cs(6Bts) IB

"Aromatic, very juicy and lively. Much the most successful white so far tasted from Jadot. Some lusciousness even. Though it’s less concentrated than some. 17/20" Jancis Robinson www.jancisrobinson.com

Puligny Montrachet Les Folatieres

16.5/20 (JR)

£200

/Cs(6Bts) IB

"Savoury yet glowing with fruit. Very fine and dry – pretty uncompromising in its super-dry build. It will presumably be knife-edge stuff to see the battle between the acidity and the fruit in this. But it is quite persistent. " Jancis Robinson www.jancisrobinson.com

Puligny Montrachet La Garenne

17/20 (JR)

£200

/Cs(6Bts) IB

"Monopole. Very honeyed, almost as though it were picked especially late. Lip smacking and satisfying." Jancis Robinson www.jancisrobinson.com

Puligny Montrachet Champs Gains

16.5/20 (JR)

£170

/Cs(6Bts) IB

"Very floral nose. Sleek and super-refreshing but with sufficient fruit (i.e. not just acidity). Chewy finish. Super-clean on the end. Solid and should not disappoint." Jancis Robinson www.jancisrobinson.com

Chambertin Clos de Beze

17+/20 (JR)

£665

/Cs(6Bts) IB

"Very dark for a Jadot 2008, like the Clos St-Denis. Even a hint of blue in there! Smudgier nose than the Clos St-Denis with a slight hint of rawness. A bit tight and introvert. Less expressive than the Clos St-Denis but it may soften into something more delightful. Rather raw note on the end. " Jancis Robinson www.jancisrobinson.com

Bonnes Mares

17+/20 (JR)

£560

/Cs(6Bts) IB

"Light crimson. Only lightly expressive nose. Sweet start and fresh enough. Correct. A real effort to express the vineyard here. Not easy to taste at the moment but it will probably get there and is far from the most expensive Bonnes Mares. Long." Jancis Robinson www.jancisrobinson.com

Clos St Denis

17.5/20 (JR)

£495

/Cs(6Bts) IB

"Notably dark crimson. Lots tucked in there though not especially discernible at the moment. Very succulent with lots of pure, fresh fruit on the front palate. This wine seems different from most of the rest...? Easy and perhaps a little more modern and user-friendly than some? Even if without any traditional funkiness. " Jancis Robinson www.jancisrobinson.com

Echezeaux

17/20 (JR)

£335

/Cs(6Bts) IB

"Mid ruby. Hints of meat and coffee on the nose. A little fresh but there is some flesh here too. Serious wine. Bone-dry finish. " Jancis Robinson www.jancisrobinson.com

Clos de Vougeot

16.5/20 (JR)

£310

/Cs(6Bts) IB

"Deep ruby. Scented. Delineated. There is energy here but not that much pleasure. Lots of very light tannins on the finish. A bit jagged. Tart finish. " Jancis Robinson www.jancisrobinson.com

Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques

17.5/20 (JR)

£300

/Cs(6Bts) IB

"Scented and together on the nose. Very inspiring. Sweet then at the moment a little dry but it should all come right. The raw materials are there. " Jancis Robinson www.jancisrobinson.com

Gevrey Chambertin Lavaux St Jacques

16/20 (JR)

£190

/Cs(6Bts) IB

"Relatively deep ruby. Mid perfume. And then pretty tart attack. Something a bit raw about this. Harsh finish." Jancis Robinson www.jancisrobinson.com

Chambolle Musigny Les Baudes

17/20 (JR)

£190

/Cs(6Bts) IB

"Pale ruby. Attractive smudgy scent. Rather rich start and lots of flattery. Complete wine. Very integrated and well balanced with sufficient ripe fruit for the acidity. " Jancis Robinson www.jancisrobinson.com

Corton Pougets

16.5/20 (JR)

£155

/Cs(6Bts) IB

"Rich, vaguely morello-cherry fruit. Thick and dense. Some slight bitterness. Not overpriced but not lusciously delicious either." Jancis Robinson www.jancisrobinson.com

Pommard Grands Epenots

16.5/20 (JR)

£145

/Cs(6Bts) IB

"VMid ruby. Lovely breadth of ripe fruit at last on the palate. Pure and expressive. Slightly dry tannins on the finish at the moment but this should develop pretty nicely with any luck. Long. " Jancis Robinson www.jancisrobinson.com

Beaune Clos des Ursules

16.5/20 (JR)

£135

/Cs(6Bts) IB

"Monopole. Light ruby. Flatteringly rich nose (compared with other 2008s). Lots of stuffing here and a crackling taffeta texture. Dry finish at the moment but all the elements seem to be in place. " Jancis Robinson www.jancisrobinson.com
