Produttori del Barbaresco: The Importance

Wine Advocate says: “Produttori del Barbaresco, one of the world’s top cooperatives, has been making terrific wines for five decades.” This is one of the Italian wine’s biggest success stories and offers probably some of the best value for money to be found anywhere in the entire country.

As Antonio Galloni puts it: “The quiet transformation that has taken place at Produttori del Barbaresco in recent years is nothing short of remarkable. Far from a sleepy, old-fashioned cooperative winery, the Produttori have stepped up their game big time over the last decade or so.” Replacing large old casks and traditional methods with a state-of-the-art winery and more practical medium casks, its wines are now “reference-points… especially in the years in which the Produttori make their flagship Riservas.” And when it comes to those wines the Vinous writer says: “The Produttori’s Riservas remain some of the greatest values in the realm of fine, cellar worthy reds.”

Their wines rival the region’s top producers, such as Angelo Gaja and Bruno Giacosa and according to Jancis Robinson’s Oxford Companion to Wine they have “helped to establish Barbaresco as a top-quality wine.” James Suckling considers them “right at the top of the pack… the Produttori is virtually synonymous with Barbaresco… Not only do members have to meet arguably the most meticulous of standards for a cooperative in the world – they are required, for instance, to bring individually each basket of grapes to the winery for inspection – but their wines are some of Italy’s best for value.”

Produttori del Barbaresco: The Insight

The cooperative encompasses fifty families across approximately 100 hectares growing exclusively Nebbiolo and producing around 45,000 cases per year. The winery produces a Barbaresco DOCG, blended from grapes harvested from different vineyards, as well as a Nebbiolo Langhe that is meant for earlier consumption. In great vintages, nine single vineyard Barbaresco Riservas, which spend 36 months in oak and around a year in bottle, are produced from sites within the village boundaries:

Asili – This is all about elegance. A protected bowl shape area producing fine but firm tannin and ethereal and refined wines.

Montefico – Dark, regal and balanced. A hidden gem, cooled by northern winds, it produces a more mineral version of Montestefano.

Montestefano – Powerful, tannic and opulent. Managing Director Aldo Vacco calls it the “Barolo of Barbaresco” due to its rich, smoky, weightiness.

Muncagota – Cooler, aromatic and expressive (name changed from Moccagatta due to labelling regulations).

Ovello – Energetic and vibrant, this is one of the coolest and most diverse zones.

Pajè – Complex, textural and almost Burgundian.

Pora – Warmer microclimate, more open and layered.

Rabajà – Chambolle-esque, complex and harmonious. East of Asili, producing more full-bodied wines than its neighbour.

Rio Sordo – Hotter zone near the Tanaro River delivering soaring power.

Produttori del Barbaresco: The Background

The history of the Produttori del Barbaresco Società Agricola Cooperativa is fascinating. Before 1894, Nebbiolo grapes were sold to make Barolo or wines were labelled Nebbiolo di Barbaresco. In 1894, Domizio Cavazza, headmaster of the Royal Enological School of Alba, created the first cooperative called the Cantine Sociali, comprised of nine Barbaresco vineyard owners. He was insistent on two things: the wines they made should be 100% Nebbiolo (at the time Barbera was a common component) and should labelled Barbaresco. Over time Cantine Sociali dramatically increased the reputation of Barbaresco and improved the lives of the farmers who would not have been able to survive without the collective.

Unfortunately, following the death of Domizio Cavazza and the economic hardship under Mussolini’s government, the Cantine Sociali closed its doors in the 1930’s. Fast forward to 1958, when favour fell back to the Nebbiolo growers of Barbaresco when a local priest named Don Fiorino created Produttori del Barbaresco. Don Fiorino recognised the need for local growers to band together as families began to leave the village to look for work elsewhere. His initiative to refocus the community on quality Barbaresco is nothing short of revolutionary. This time, the group was made up of nineteen growers who banded together, to once again emphasize the quality and potential of the Nebbiolo grape variety. The first three vintages were made in a local church basement in Barbaresco while the collective raised funds for a proper winery. In 1961, the first official home of Produttori del Barbaresco was opened across from the church.

Today, the original group of nineteen has grown to around fifty, who collectively make some of the best Barbaresco in Piemont. The winery has maintained its original mandate to favour quality over quantity and traditional methods to create pure and long-lived expressions of Nebbiolo. The wines are simply not to be missed.
