Chateau Ausone: The Importance

Château Ausone is one of only four wines ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) in Saint-Emilion. Its importance can be explained in two words and a single name: size, terroir and Alain Vauthier.

Size: Jancis Robinson describes Château Ausone as a “miniscule but exceptionally fine estate”. Its diminutive seven hectare area means that the exquisite wines produced here are limited to around 2,000 cases per year, meaning that supply never meets the insatiable demand.

Terroir: according to Jeff Leve: “When you ask almost any Bordeaux winemaker or Bordeaux Château owner to name the best terroir in Bordeaux, the overwhelming majority say it belongs to Château Ausone.”  Robert Parker calls it “hallowed terroir”, the steep vineyard contains densely packed old vines (averaging 50-years-old, but some are centenarian) on limestone and clay soils. The majority of the vines are on an east-southeast-facing, terraced slope called the grande côte, which is atypical and excellent for ripening. The old Cabernet Franc vines are planted in an old quarry that protects and keeps them warm.

Alain Vauthier: “What can be said further about the perfectionist proprietor Alain Vaulthier?” asked Robert Parker. “Here is a man who sees the future… He has made the finest wines of the vintage for the last decade or so, and the accolades he received worldwide seem only to propel him to greater heights.” Vaulthier revolutionised this estate, dramatically modernising, tightening selection, increasing density of planting and introducing a second wine. Robert Parker said: “Kudos to Alain Vauthier for pushing the envelope as far as anyone in Bordeaux is doing today.” Under his watchful eye Château Ausone has become one of Bordeaux’s, if not the world’s, finest wines.

Chateau Ausone: The Insight

Neal Martin says: “There is an enigmatic quality to Ausone; magic pervades every nook and cranny, and that includes the wine.” Its fairy tale archway looks like something from imagined by Tolkien, and the finished article is similarly otherworldly. Critics commend its purity of fruit, its powerful aromatics and its balance. Wine Advocate and James Suckling have both given it a perfect 100 points twice, although for different vintages; the former for 2003 and 2005, the latter for 2009 and 2015. As stated above, quality coupled with rarity means that Château Ausone commands a high price…

Neal Martin confesses: "Whenever I taste the wine [Ausone], which given its prohibitive price is most often out of barrel these days, it is the piercing focus, the delineation, that balletic poise that distinguishes this wine from any other (an attribute that is often prevalent in the second wine that is kinder on the wallet).”

In his Wine Buyer’s Guide, Robert Parker says of that second wine: “Readers should not hesitate to check out La Chapelle d’Ausone.” Made by the same team, with the same care and attention; if a chance arises to buy La Chapelle d’Ausone it should be very seriously considered - but quickly, while the opportunity remains.

Chateau Ausone: The Background

Whether Château Ausone was really the Roman poet Ausonius’ vineyard is highly contested, but that is where the name comes from. While many Bordeaux châteaux have tumultuous histories, as Jeff Leve puts it: “Château Ausone is one of the few famed Bordeaux wine estates that has seldom changed hands over the years.” Alain Vauthier and his daughter Pauline, who run the property now, are the descendants of the family who owned the estate back in the seventeenth century. The family also own Moulin St Georges, de Fonbel, Simard, Haut-Simard and La Clotte.

The Grand Vin is usually roughly a 50:50 blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, aged in predominantly new oak for around two years.
